How to make a binder panel for your pencil case

One of my customers, Nora, asked me to design a set of pencil cases that can clip into a school binder. Well, after much thinking, I finally came up with a simple method to turn most cases into a binder pouch.

What you need is stiffened craft felt. Choose a color to match the fabric used for the pencil bag. For a two ring binder, I cut a piece 4¾ long x 2 inches wide (12 x 5 cm).

Using a water soluble pen, draw a line down the length of your felt about ¾ inches from one long edge. Line up the felt next to the rings in your binder and carefully mark where the holes should be made. Mark the hole positions on the line you drew to make sure they are straight.

Then punch through the felt with an eyelet punch. Easy!

The binder panel is then sewn into the bottom seam of your bag. With our new Jumbo pencil cases, simply position the binder panel inside the design area before the backing panel is added. The backing and the felt strip are then sewn to the case front in one go.
