Unleash
the fabric artist in you with our Funky Flower Patch Purse!
This
is a layered appliqué project – first make your own unique
background by appliquéing different strips of fabric to create a wavy
pattern. The fabric joins are decorated with satin and decorative
stitches. Then embroider the flowers and leaves to complete the
design.
Once
the purse front panels are made, add beads, buttons and decorations to
further embellish your embroidery. The result is an eye-popping
display of color, texture and trimmings.
There
are two designs in this set, which make up the purse front.

Shown left is a close-up
of the new
8x12 Funky Flower Patch Purse.
My color scheme was
black and gray/silver and within this
limited palette I concentrated on texture and fabric type.
The background panels are fake suede and satin. The flowers
and leaves were made with gray and silver velvet, felt,
printed poly-cotton and leather.
Once embroidered I added
hot fix crystals to some of the
flower centers for sparkle. The small 3D butterfly was
purchased at a local haberdashery shop. It has organza
wings, wire antennae and a beaded body.

Shown above left – Three
coordinating African Shwe Shwe cotton fabrics used for the background
with flowers and leaves done in a mix of blues and orange
Shown above right – A variety of pink quilting and poly
cottons for the background with flowers done in pinks and brown. Green
felt was used for the leaves. The
purse fabric is a pair of recycled denim jeans, finished off with a
shocking pink feathery trim and pink sparkly flower beads.

Shown above left
– Three shades of jacquard sateen brocade was used for the
background (I wouldn't recommend using such a thick fabric for layered
appliqués but as an experiment it turned out quite nicely!). The
flowers are a combination of felt, quilting cottons, faux suede and
upholstery scraps. Brown felt was used for the leaves. Additional
embellishments include crocheted and beaded flowers as well as shisha
mirrors.
Shown
above right –
A riot of color with blues and greens as the background theme. Flowers
were made with pink and orange felt and fabric. Green felt was used
for the leaves. Multi-colored seed beads were used to accent two of
the flowers. Colorful flower shaped sequins were also attached to the
bag front. |
